On a chilly day in March, the NRSC hosted a Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) training session designed to teach CF volunteers about the critical issues facing hemlock populations due to invasive pests such as the hemlock woolly adelgid. The training began with an overview of the ecological significance of hemlock trees, which are not only vital for maintaining the health of forest ecosystems but also provide essential habitat for various wildlife species. Participants were introduced to the life cycle of the hemlock woolly adelgid, its devastating impact on hemlock trees, and the importance of timely intervention in managing these invasive species. HRI taught volunteers about the various methods of control, including biological and chemical approaches, using practical demonstrations , where participants had the opportunity to observe and practice techniques for assessing tree health and identifying signs of infestation. This training underscores NRSC's belief in the importance of education and collaboration in the fight against environmental threats. Thank you very much to HRI and CF "Hemlock Friends" volunteers!
